The PhotoHunt today is 'Colours' ~ with the proper spelling. (can anyone explain why the spelling is different?)
We have decided to take a road trip for a chilly, but sunny, weekend at the beach . . . just to enjoy the colours.
Happy Hunting Y'all ~
Sandi
Next Saturday's PhotoHunt is 'Deluxe'

Beautiful shot. I think I messed up and spelled it color. Here's what I found: Color and colour are different spellings of the same word. Color is the preferred spelling in American English, and colour is preferred in all other main varieties of English. Both spellings are many centuries old. Color, now regarded as the American spelling, in fact predates the United States by several centuries. In early use the spellings vied for ascendancy with several other spellings. Colur, culoure, and coolor, for instance, were all in the mix before the modern British spelling gained permanent prevalence in the 17th century. The American preference for color took hold in the middle 19th century thanks in large part to the conscious simplification of English spellings by people such as the lexicographer Noah Webster.
ReplyDeleteI get confused by grey and gray too and use both spelling. I'm never sure with that one which is more common in the U.S. and which is more common in the UK.
Well here is my photohunt post link below:

Love that umbrella!! I want one! lol
ReplyDeleteAs I mentioned on facebook, I think I might be the spelling culprit! If this was one of my suggested themes, I would definitely have spelled it with the "u". (I would also spell "grey" with an e, not an a, by the way! lol)

Having lived in both the UK and US, I find that I use both British English and American English in my speech and writings -- sometimes without realizing which is which. On the other hand, I definitely do associate the word color with American English and colour with British English, so was surprised to see colour rather than not color employed in this Photo Hunt! ;)
ReplyDeleteAny way you spell it though, my take on the theme is here:-

Whether "colours" or "colors", I always seem drawn to photography of bright and cheerful colors and, especially in India, where I have spent fifteen months of the past two years, I'm rewarded with so many opportunities for incredibly colorful photography. I love your beautiful beach umbrella and the sea and sand. My contribution is at: http://rnsane.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-saturday-photo-hunt-colours-cricket.html.

ReplyDeleteI deleted my comment due to messing up my link. I'm not good with the links. Anyway I said this umbrella reminds me of living in North Carolina. I used to love to plant a colourful umbrella and read a good book.
